The University of Mary Washington today announced a $1.1 million gift, which the school will use to offer scholarships to students from diverse backgrounds.
The money will fund what the school is calling the Dorsey Scholars Program, funded Paul R. and Mary Ann Dorsey Judy of Northfield, Ill. She graduated from in the class of 1954.
The first scholarships in the program will be awarded for the '09-'10 school year to at least five full-time undergraduate students.
Among considerations for receiving a scholarship will be race, ethnicity, culture, socioeconomic status, disability, religion and geography, among other considerations.

I think anything that promotes education is wonderful! The article doesn't say but I'd bet that stipulations were placed on the "gift" which is any donor's prerogative. Would you prefer to support someone through your tax dollars because they were hindered by their disability or socio-economic status/background from being able to attend college?

I am offended that they are giving scholarships based on race/ethnciity and not scholarship. I applied for financial aid this year and received NOTHNG, and I have a 4.0 GPA. What is up with that? I am very involved with community groups etc. and still received NOTHING. I was eligible for fiancial aid and received soem money from the state. UMW has their priorities screwed up if you ask me.
What a shame

This wasn't my money and if it had been it would not have gone to Mary Washington College. If it had been my money, I could have thought of at least a thousand "better uses" for this $1.1 million such as sick children, homelessness, etc.
What R U talking about !
