The Caroline County Board of Supervisors deferred action Tuesday last night on a proposed sand and gravel extraction permit until Nov. 13.
Local farmer Emmett Snead is requesting a special exception permit from the county to mine more than 20 acres along U.S. 17/Tidewater Trail in northern Caroline.
More than 75 people turned out for a public hearing last night.
Thirty-five offered comments to the Board of Supervisors. Speakers were about two-to-one against Snead’s permit for Clark’s Cut II sand and gravel extraction permit. He is the owner of Snead’s Asparagus Farm.
Petitions were submitted to supervisors—in favor and against it .
If he gains county approval, Snead has plans for the land after mining is completed. He intends to reclaim the land for a pond and vineyards or berry farming.
Snead has said the land is better for mining than farming as 95 percent of the parcel is rich in coarse sand—material that can be used for making concrete.
